What’s New in JAWS 10
This page describes the new features and improvements available in JAWS version 10. To go directly to the JAWS 10 download links on this page, choose JAWS download links. JAWS 10 Features
JAWS 10 offers several new features and improvements as described on this page. To learn more, read the entire What’s New, or, if you are a JAWS user, press INSERT+F6 to open a list of headings and then jump directly to a specific item. JAWS 10 supports 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 2008 Server, and 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server operating systems. Windows 2000 users need to continue using JAWS 9.
JAWS 10 for 64-bit Windows Vista
It is becoming more and more common for new computers to come equipped with 64-bit Windows Vista operating system. A 64-bit version of JAWS is now available to run on these systems. Use the 64-bit download links on this page to install the latest JAWS 10 64-bit release.
JAWS Tandem Auditing
JAWS Tandem now maintains a log of session activity using the Windows Event Log service. These events are used to record the beginning and end of a session, the suspension and continuation of a session, and errors triggered before a session starts. The advantage of having such a log is that consultants and trainers now have a record of JAWS Tandem activity which is useful for tracking time for billing purposes. The event log can be set up so that only administrators can delete events. Also, users assigned any privilege level can write events to the event log. Again, JAWS Tandem does not record user activity; only session errors and the start, suspension, restart, and end of a session. Multiple Sound Card Support
You can have multiple sound cards connected to your computer. The addition of a second internal sound card, an external USB sound card, or a USB headset are examples of multiple sound cards. Typically, Windows makes the last sound card added to your system the default sound card. This means that JAWS speech automatically goes to the new audio device, which can be frustrating if you want to use that device for something other than JAWS.
With this release of JAWS, you can now override the Windows default selection, and choose which sound card to use for JAWS speech. If you are editing music, you can let Windows direct your music through a higher-end audio card while JAWS directs its speech output to an inexpensive sound card in your computer.
To select which sound device to use for JAWS speech, open the Sound Cards submenu, which is a new addition to the JAWS Utilities menu, and choose a card from the list. If you later remove that card from your computer, JAWS will automatically fall back to the Windows default sound card. If you restore the sound card to the system, JAWS will again send speech to that card instead of the Windows default sound card. IAccessible2 Support
IAccessible2 (IA2) is an open standard that lets an application or Web page developer provide a detailed description of an object or control for assistive technology products. A combo box on a Web page is an example of the type of control that could contain a full description. You can configure JAWS to speak this information or alert you with a sound when it encounters such a control. If the latter occurs, you can then press INSERT+TAB to have JAWS read the additional information.
To configure this functionality in JAWS, use the Advanced Options dialog box in Configuration Manager, or press INSERT+V to open JAWS settings, and select Off, Speak, or Alert with Sound for the IAccessible2 Descriptions option. Speak is the default setting.
Yahoo! Messenger 9 Support
JAWS 10 supports Yahoo! Messenger version 9.0.0.2136 and later. Make sure to download the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger to guarantee full compatibility with JAWS.
Catalan RealSpeak Solo Direct Voice
Nuria, the Catalan RealSpeak Solo Direct voice, is now available for JAWS. Go to RealSpeak Solo Direct Voices for Freedom Scientific Products to listen to a sample.
PlaceMarker Keystroke Update
The keystroke to set a Temporary PlaceMarker on a Web page has changed from CTRL+K to CTRL+WINDOWS Key+K.
The CTRL+K keystroke now opens a duplicate tab in Internet Explorer 8.
JAWS Tandem – Listen to the September FSCast for an Overview
JAWS Tandem lets you access another JAWS computer so that you can provide hands-on technical support, write and distribute scripts from a distance, and conduct remote JAWS training. It consists of a controller system, used by support personnel, distributors, dealers, consultants, and trainers, and a target system, which is a customers computer and JAWS application.
A connection, also known as an online meeting between two systems, can take place using the Internet or over a local network. The Internet meeting process is called a Tandem Center session, while the local network method is called a Tandem Direct session. In a Tandem Center session, JAWS Tandem running as a controller is a subscription service; JAWS Tandem running as a target is free. (With the initial release of JAWS 10, controller functionality is being offered for free for a limited time.) In a Tandem Direct session, a one-time activation fee is required.
JAWS Tandem controls are available under the Utilities menu of the JAWS application window. You can find help for this feature in the Quick Start Guide, which is located in the JAWS Tandem submenu, of the Utilities menu. Also, the JAWS help file contains the JAWS Tandem book, which has topics describing how to use this feature.

iTunes 8 Support
JAWS now provides access to iTunes® 8, including support for the iTunes Store. Using the virtual cursor, you can browse and search the store for all content, including music, movies, TV shows, and educational content. Purchasing individual tracks or full albums is now accessible.

New JAWS 10 Features Demonstrated in Two Different FSCasts

Surf’s Up! Surfing the Internet with JAWS
Surf’s Up!, the Freedom Scientific Web page that explains how to surf the Web with JAWS, has been updated to help instructors and students take advantage of the new JAWS 10 features that are mentioned on this page. Pay particular attention to the Forms page. It gives great details for using the new Auto Forms Mode function.
Auto Forms Mode
Traditionally, Forms Mode in JAWS has been activated manually when you needed to type text into edit fields or select combo box values on Web pages and Adobe Acrobat forms. By default, JAWS is in Virtual Mode which allows you to use Navigation Quick Keys such as F for next form field or E for next edit box. When you need to interact with a form in order to type in text, you must manually turn on Forms Mode using the ENTER key. You can toggle off Forms Mode using ESC or the NUM PAD PLUS key.
Auto Forms Mode will automatically turn on Forms Mode when you move into combo box controls using TAB, or edit fields using either TAB or ARROW Keys. This makes if far more intuitive and easy to interact with form fields found on Web pages without having to do these extra keystrokes. When you press ARROW Keys or TAB to move to an edit field, you will hear a sound indicating you can type at that moment without having to first press ENTER. When you exit the control using an ARROW Key, Forms Mode turns off and will let you easily continue to navigate in virtual mode again. This functionality can be very useful for new and sighted JAWS users in training environments but even longtime JAWS users will quickly adapt to this new method with a little practice. By default, Auto Forms Mode is on. There are two ways to turn it off. First, you can press INSERT+V and then change the Auto Forms Mode option to off. Second, you can use the new Forms Mode Options dialog located in Configuration Manager.
Note: You can use the Forms Mode option in Personalized Settings to customize specific Web pages so that Auto Forms Mode is off when the page is opened. This lets you take advantage of this great new feature on most pages you browse, but also turns it off if you have sites where you want to remain in control of Forms Mode manually. This option is found in the Personalized Settings dialog box, which is accessed by pressing INSERT+SHIFT+V. On is the default setting.
RealSpeak Solo Direct Synthesizer
JAWS 10 supports the RealSpeak™ Solo Direct synthesizer from Nuance® Communications. This new synthesizer works exclusively with Freedom Scientific products. It consists of over 40 voices and more than 20 languages. Go to the RealSpeak Solo Direct Voices for Freedom Scientific Products Web page to listen to samples, or download any of these voices.
Note that another way to open this Web page is to use the new RealSpeak Solo Direct link available in the JAWS application window. The link is in Web Resources under the Help menu.
Dictionary Manager Tree View
The Dictionary Manager lets you change the way JAWS speaks words, phrases, abbreviations, or symbols to avoid any mispronunciation. In JAWS 10, the Dictionary manager has been expanded so that you can create rules applying to specific languages, synthesizers, or voices. Once the rule is created, it is added to the top of the Dictionary Entries list. It is identified by language, for example, English, and can be expanded into a tree view to show other restrictions that apply to the rule. To open the Dictionary Manager in any application, press INSERT+D.
Navigation Quick Key Manager
Navigation Quick Keys are convenient keystrokes that let you quickly move around Web pages, PDF files, Word documents, and Outlook e-mail messages. Beginning with JAWS 10, you can now change the keystroke assigned to a quick key with any unassigned letter or number using the Navigation Quick Key Manager. This gives you the flexibility of assigning a character that is easy for you to remember. Any changes that you make are immediately applied to the new quick key assignment. To open a Navigation Quick Key Manager from within an application, press INSERT+F2, N, and then ENTER.
Navigation Quick Key Operation in Microsoft Word
When turned on, Navigation Quick Keys let you quickly and easily move through a Word document. For example, you can press H to jump to the next heading in a Word document, P to jump to the next paragraph, and G to jump to the next graphic. JAWS 10 will now automatically turn off Navigation Quick Keys when you open a Ribbon, menu, or dialog box in Word. In previous JAWS releases, Navigation Quick Keys would remain on until toggled off using INSERT+Z, or turned off using the Navigation Quick Keys option after pressing INSERT+V.
Voice Profiles
The Global Voices and Individual Voices profiles in JAWS have been updated to closely match functionality available in MAGic 11 and later. These profiles let you create and save speech rate, pitch, synthesizer, language, punctuation level, and other speech options. Use the Default and Application radio buttons to apply the voice settings as new JAWS default values or as voice settings to a specific application. For more information about these items, open the JAWS Help file, select the Using JAWS book from the Table of Contents pane, and then open the Voice Settings book.
To open the dialog box for either voice profile, choose Options (ALT+O) from the JAWS application window, select Voices (V), and then select Global Adjustment (G) or Individual Voice Adjustment (I). To change voice profiles on the fly, press INSERT+CTRL+S to open the Select a Voice Profile dialog box, and then select a profile from the list.
Language Menu Changes
The Synthesizer Language and Change Synthesizer commands have been removed from the Language menu in the JAWS application window and been replaced by the Voice Profiles command. This new command lets you select and instantly switch to another synthesizer and voice combination that you set up as a voice profile. For more about voice profiles, open the JAWS Help file, and refer to the Global Voices or Individual Voices topics. These topics are found in Voice Settings in the Using JAWS book.
Unified English Braille or Contracted English Braille Setup
JAWS can now provide contracted braille using either Contracted English Braille, formerly known as grade 2 braille, as defined in translation rules from the Braille Authority of North America (BANA), or Unified English Braille (UEB) as provided by the International Council on English Braille (ICEB). Using Braille Options in the Configuration Manager, you can configure JAWS for either method using two new radio buttons: Contracted English Braille (default) and Unified English Braille. The braille translation method can be set up with or without a braille display attached to your system so that it is ready for use when you select the Enable Translator check box.
Reply Directly to Sender on Mailing Lists
The Reply Directly to Sender command, a JAWS command that you can use with Microsoft Outlook, is fully functional in JAWS 10. If you subscribe to a mailing list, this useful command lets you reply directly to the sender’s e-mail address from the open e-mail message instead of the entire mailing list address. The keystroke for this command is INSERT+SHIFT+R.
Downloading Freedom Scientific DAISY Books with FSReader Demo
Starting with JAWS 10, you can use FSReader Demo to download DAISY books directly from the Freedom Scientific Web site. The advantage of this feature over earlier JAWS releases is that you no longer need the product CD to install any of the DAISY books.
You can also use the Check for Updates command to quickly select and download DAISY books. From the Help menu in the JAWS application window, choose Check for Updates, select any DAISY book from the list, and then choose the Install button.
In addition to using Check for Updates, you can also visit the Freedom Scientific Training Downloads Web page and directly download DAISY books.
Basic Training Updated for JAWS 10
The JAWS 10 Basic Training has been revised and includes the latest information about the new JAWS 10 features. The training is available in text and audio DAISY format as well as individual MP3 modules. ARIA Live Region Support
JAWS 10 can announce updates to live regions of Web pages when using Firefox 3 and later. Live region support will be available in Internet Explorer 8 when it is officially released. The dynamic section of a Web page that receives constant updates, such as news headlines, business information, and weather updates, is known as a live region. By default, JAWS announces updates for Web pages containing ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) Live Region markup. Web content creators add specific ARIA tags to their pages to mark regions as “live.” To stop JAWS from announcing updates, use the Announce Live Region Updates option to temporarily turn off this functionality. Just press INSERT+V while running your Web browser, navigate to this option, and then press SPACEBAR.
ARIA Landmark Support
The keystroke for Select a Mouse Over Element has changed from INSERT+CTRL+SEMICOLON to INSERT+WINDOWS Key+SEMICOLON.
The INSERT+CTRL+SEMICOLON keystroke now supports the function Select a Landmark. Landmarks are ARIA tags that define the structure of a Web page. This functionality provides useful information to a JAWS user when he or she navigates pages that support ARIA landmark tags. Web content creators add these tags to their pages. JAWS 10 and later can announce Web page landmarks when using Firefox 3 and later. Landmark support will be available in Internet Explorer 8 when it is officially released.
Finally, the SEMICOLON and SHIFT+SEMICOLON keystrokes no longer represent Move to Next Mouse Over Element and Move to Previous Mouse Over Element. These keystrokes now stand for Move to Next Landmark and Move to Previous Landmark.
Windows Media Player 11
JAWS 10 supports Windows Media Player 11. For example, to hear the name of the track that is playing, press INSERT+CTRL+T. Also, while navigating a playlist, JAWS announces the track that is playing. Use auto playlist, a Windows Media Player feature that is fully functional with JAWS 10, to create, edit, and save playlists. Finally, with JAWS 10, the Windows Media Player user interface is much more intuitive when using sliders and toggle buttons to control items such as volume, crossfading, shuffle, and repeat.
Microsoft Access 2007
JAWS 10 supports Access 2007. A great deal of work has been done to make sure that Access 2007 users find the out-of-the-box experience working very well for both speech and braille output. JAWS now provides the proper information as you navigate with F6, enter and exit tables, or use Access wizards and dialogs.
Better Performance with Microsoft Outlook Calendar
Significant performance improvements have been made to the calendar in Microsoft Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003. Script developers will appreciate the streamlining of scripts and internal code. This all leads to enhanced responsiveness, easier script localization, and better handling of date and time announcements.
AudibleManager Scripts
The scripts for AudibleManager, a program that lets you listen to audio books purchased from Audible.com, have been updated. The obsolete keystroke CTRL+1 has been removed; problems with JAWS not speaking correctly when you select or cancel the selection of text while in the Library list view have been corrected; terminology referring to mobile devices has been updated; and an issue preventing you from moving out of the list view of the File Import dialog box has been fixed.
Run JAWS without Speech
The Run JAWS without Speech check box has been added to Basic Settings. It is located in the Advanced Options dialog box by choosing Options (ALT+O) from the JAWS application window, selecting Basic (B), and then selecting the Advanced button (D) in the Basic Settings dialog box.
Script Manager Changes
The SelectASynthesizer script (INSERT+CTRL+S) has been changed to the SelectAVoiceProfile script. Its purpose is to allow you to switch from one voice profile to another. Previously, the keystroke would let you temporarily change the speech synthesizer on the fly. It now lets you select the voice profile from anywhere in Windows. Once you select a profile from the Select a Voice Profile dialog box, it will become your start up voice profile.
The SelectALanguage script (WINDOWS Key+CTRL+L) has been removed.
New Keystroke for Reading Clipboard Contents
You can now read the contents of the clipboard at anytime by pressing WINDOWS Key+INSERT+X. This feature was adopted from MAGic where it was first introduced.
New HTML Table Keystrokes
When in a table on a Web page, you can move between and read columns by pressing WINDOWS Key+LEFT ARROW, which reads the previous column, and by pressing WINDOWS Key+RIGHT ARROW, which reads the contents of the next column.
JAWS Remote Access Reminder
As a reminder, JAWS also has a Remote Access feature. It lets you connect to another computer to access files and run programs just as if you are in front of and using the remote computer’s keyboard. This is not new JAWS functionality and should not be confused with JAWS Tandem. JAWS Tandem allows you, from the controller computer, to run the target computer while the target user is also on the computer and listening to all activity. With JAWS Remote Access, no one at the remote computer can see or hear your activity. Refer to the Remote Access book and topics in the JAWS help file for more information.

Enhancements in JAWS 10.0.1142 (March 2009)
The following is a list of items addressed between the final JAWS 10.0.1139 release and the JAWS 10.0.1142 posting.
• The Yahoo Instant Messenger.jss script file has been updated and included in JAWS 10 to provide support for the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9. Make sure to download the latest Yahoo! Messenger for full compatibility with JAWS 10.
• The message history in AOL Instant Messenger and the e-mail messages in the Gmail Inbox are now visible to JAWS. Previously, the virtual buffer would appear to be blank if you tried to read message history or Inbox messages.
• When navigating through the Gmail Inbox, you can once again select and open an e-mail message by pressing ENTER when focus is on the text in the Subject column. In a previous release, it was necessary to turn off the Virtual Cursor or use the JAWS cursor to open the e-mail message.
• Resolved an issue related to certain Web pages with frames, which, when updated, created a situation where JAWS would not read the text present in the updated frame. This problem was reported for both Gmail and the Webinar software used by the Freedom Scientific Training department for the new Webinars, both free and paid, now being offered.
• The default JAWS dictionary file (default.jdf) has been updated to include the correct pronunciation of two Russian symbols.
• In the JAWS help file, the Using the JAWS Cursor topic now describes the Real Window and the Focus Window restriction options that are available for the JAWS Cursor. Previously, this topic only mentioned the Application Window, Current Window, Unrestricted, and Frame restrictions.

Enhancements in JAWS 10.0.1139 (March 2009)
The following is a list of items addressed between the final JAWS 10.0.512 release and the JAWS 10.0.1139 posting. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in this release. JAWS
• JAWS no longer creates a braille contraction error for the word doggone.
• For Unified English Braille (UEB) and contracted English braille (Grade 2) output, words such as thermoform and chloroform are forward translated correctly using the for sign.
• Resolved a memory leak issue that was noticed when switching between RealSpeak Solo Direct and Eloquence voice profiles.
• Tables now display correctly in Outlook 2007 and Word 2007 when you have a braille display attached, and the Document Presentation option is set to Screen Layout.
• Scripts have been created for tcConference software, which is Web conferencing software that supports Freedom Scientific online training sessions. For more information, see the Freedom Scientific Webinar Schedule and Registration Page.
• Resolved an issue where the word realign was using the ea sign for UEB and contracted English braille.
• JAWS now speaks the status of the check boxes in the Options dialog box of Word and Outlook when you press the SPACEBAR.
• The word Micronesia now translates correctly for contracted English braille.
• JAWS will now echo the F3 keystroke.
• The MSAA Mode combo box is now described in the Advanced Options Dialog topic in the JAWS help file.
• Screen sensitive help INSERT+F1 is now available for the Translation Table combo box in the Braille Basic Settings dialog box.
• When running JAWS and MAGic together, pressing INSERT+UP ARROW to say a line in the Mouse Enhancement or the Cursor Enhancement dialog box for MAGic no longer causes a left mouse click at the location of the JAWS cursor.
• New BANA rules for some Grade 2 symbols have been implemented.
• Configuration Manager will automatically save changes to remote access settings when you close the manager.
• The “lnk” type is now shown on the right side of a braille display instead of the right side when a link appears by itself on a line in applications such as Word and Outlook 2007.
Adobe Acrobat
• When you move about the different panes of a dialog box, such as the tree view and read-only edit boxes found in the About Adobe Plug-Ins dialog box, JAWS now only reads the item that is currently selected instead of additional items that are not selected that also appear in the dialog box.
• JAWS was not detecting tables in some PDF files. This has been corrected.
• JAWS speech and focus work correctly after creating a bookmark in a PDF file.
Adobe Flex
• JAWS correctly reads the number of sliders that appear on the computer screen.
Corel WordPerfect X3
• This release resolves a long standing issue when reading and navigating by paragraphs in a WordPerfect X3 document. JAWS now correctly reads the current paragraph from beginning to end when using CTRL+NUM PAD 5. In addition, when you use CTRL+UP ARROW and CTRL+DOWN ARROW to jump to and read the previous or next paragraph, JAWS correctly moves to and reads the paragraphs instead of stopping on blank lines.
Microsoft Excel
• When an Excel workbook contains data on multiple worksheets, JAWS now correctly reads cell information on the current worksheet. Before, when switching back and forth between worksheets, JAWS would sometimes read data from the previous worksheet.
• If a Title Region is created in one region of a worksheet, JAWS no longer behaves sluggishly when navigating in other regions on the same worksheet.
• In the JAWS help file, the obsolete keystroke CTRL+SHIFT+R has been removed and replaced with INSERT+SHIFT+R, which is the keystroke for listing cells in the current row.
• In the JAWS help file, the obsolete keystroke CTRL+SHIFT+C has been removed and replaced with INSERT+SHIFT+C, which is the keystroke for listing cells in the current column.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
• This release resolves a long standing issue with the INSERT+F8 keystroke and Internet Explorer. When you open the Internet Explorer Toolbar dialog box using this keystroke, JAWS no longer inserts an ampersand in the text links that appear in the toolbar list.
• When using JAWS Find (CTRL+F) and Say All (INSERT+DOWN ARROW) together, JAWS speech no longer stops if you press F3 to jump to the next instance of the search string. Instead, JAWS moves to the next item and then continues reading.
• Braille focus no longer jumps to the bottom of a Web page when you turn off JAWS speech.
• Resolved an issue with the Illinois Center for Information Technology Accessibility Web page where ARIA Live regions were not updating.
• JAWS correctly navigates back and forth between Web pages at www.cjob.com without announcing an Unknown Function Call message.
• Resolved an issue of sluggish JAWS performance with the New York Times Web site.
• The keyboard help message (INSERT+1) for the INSERT+Z keystroke has been updated to state that it toggles the Virtual Cursor between Off and Auto.
• JAWS no longer announces input fields that are hidden from view by a cascading style sheet.
• JAWS correctly reads alt text and links while in Virtual mode in Internet Explorer.
• After pressing F5 to refresh a Web page, JAWS will once again read and recognize links in the INSERT+F7 links list.
• Web pages that use the Windows Media Player plug-in are now accessible with JAWS.
• Table navigation keystrokes no function correctly when a blank line is encountered between table data.
• The read-only help messages for Internet Explorer’s Adjust JAWS Options (INSERT+V) have been corrected and updated.
• Instead of saying, “contains text,” JAWS now reads the text when you press TAB to move into a read-only edit field.
• The Select and Copy option for Internet Explorer can be set to one of the following: Full Content using Onscreen Highlight or From Virtual Cursor.
• JAWS no longer speaks the wrong text after pressing TAB or ARROW Keys to move away from an edit field in which you have just typed text.
• In the Customize Punctuation dialog box of Configuration Manager, JAWS now reads the symbol U+F0E0 as right arrow bullet.
Microsoft Notepad
• Navigation by sentence (ALT+DOWN ARROW) and paragraph (CTRL+DOWN ARROW) work correctly in Notepad.
Microsoft Outlook
• Plain text e-mail messages that you forward or respond to typically have lines of text prefixed with a greater than sign. When you read the message by previous or next paragraph (CTRL+UP ARROW or CTRL+DOWN ARROW) in Outlook 2003, JAWS now recognizes and reads any paragraph prefaced with a greater than sign.
• The screen sensitive help (INSERT+F1) for a Note (CTRL+SHIFT+N) in Outlook has been improved.
• JAWS now provides greater detail about appointments that appear in the French and Spanish versions of Microsoft Outlook when you press TAB to move from one Calendar item to another.
• INSERT+H hot key help is now available for the Macros dialog box in Outlook.
• When multiple appointments appear in the Outlook Calendar, JAWS now announces these appointments and all associated information as you navigate the list using the UP or DOWN ARROW keys.
• While creating an e-mail or Calendar appointment in Outlook 2007, if you jump to and navigate through Ribbon items using TAB, JAWS navigation will now remain in the Ribbons and not accidentally return to the message or appointment text. Previously, after pressing TAB a few times, JAWS would lose its navigation focus and jump to the body text.
• When a layout table appears in an e-mail message, JAWS will now correctly read text in both speech and braille as you navigate into or out of the table using the DOWN and UP ARROW keys. Previously, JAWS would announce the text correctly, but the braille display would show the last line of the table or combine several lines into one.
• JAWS now announces the recurrence and reminder flags when pressing TAB to move through Outlook 2003 appointments.
• JAWS no longer announces an unknown function call when editing or reading an e-mail message.
• When using Word as the editor in Outlook 2003, the braille contents of the To field no longer automatically appear in the CC and BCC fields in the message header.
• When viewing an all day event using the Virtual Viewer, JAWS now correctly states that it is an all day event.
• When you open an e-mail message using Outlook Express, JAWS no longer announces the subject line multiple times.
• You can create F1 key help messages for check boxes and combo boxes in Word forms. As you press the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to move through the form, JAWS will now announce if these form controls have associated help messages.
• In Outlook 2007 if text is selected in the preview pane, you can use SHIFT+TAB to move back to the folder list.
• In the Word 2007 Modify Styles dialog box, JAWS did not speak the read-only text that described Style Properties. Now, when you use the ARROW Keys to move through and read multiple lines, JAWS will read the text.
• When you press ALT+1 twice quickly, JAWS now reads the header field of an e-mail message instead of sending the message.
• The text on a braille display now remains when navigating by character on a link in an e-mail message.
Microsoft PowerPoint
• When e-mailing a presentation from within PowerPoint 2007, JAWS correctly announces the header edit fields, such as To, CC, and Subject, as you press TAB to move through the fields.
• The color can be selected in the Format Background dialog box in PowerPoint 2007.
• The INSERT+F1 help messages have been updated to include information about all slide layout types.
• The INSERT+1 keyboard help for the SPACEBAR and BACKSPACE keys in PowerPoint is now correct.
• The Custom Labels option is not available in PowerPoint and no longer appears in the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box for PowerPoint.
Microsoft Word
• When enabled, Navigation Quick Keys let you quickly and easily move through a Word document. For example, you can press H to jump to the next heading in a Word document, P to jump to the next paragraph, and G to jump to the next graphic. JAWS 10 will now automatically turn off Navigation Quick Keys when you open a Ribbon, menu, or dialog box in Word. In previous JAWS releases, Navigation Quick Keys would remain on until toggled off using INSERT+Z, or turned off using the Navigation Quick Keys option after pressing INSERT+V.
• When you move by word through the edit fields of a form using CTRL+RIGHT ARROW or CTRL+LEFT ARROW, JAWS correctly announces the entire word instead of the first character of the word.
• JAWS no longer double speaks when moving through items in edit combo boxes in Word 2003 documents.
• JAWS will now turn off table coordinates for braille in Word tables.
• JAWS correctly announces color information for text and borders in Word 2007 documents.
• When a table contains only one column, JAWS now announces information about the table when the document window gains focus.
• When typing in the edit field of the Bookmarks dialog box in Word 2007, JAWS no longer reads text from the beginning to the current cursor position as you type characters in the edit field.
• In JAWS 10, you can once again type accented characters in a Word document.
• When you select a text box in Word, the cursor now appears in the top left corner and is ready to read.
• When you use the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to read a Word document by line, JAWS no longer announces “new line” when you reach the end of the current line.
• JAWS now speaks the correct message when using the Find Next (CTRL+PAGE DOWN) and Find Prior commands (CTRL+PAGE UP) for bookmarks and objects.
• When moving by line using the UP or DOWN ARROW in a Word form, JAWS no longer announces form fields twice.
Mozilla Firefox
• Now, when running Gmail™ in Firefox 3.0.5, JAWS correctly announces edit instead of frame when you navigate into the edit fields of a Gmail message header.
• JAWS now recognizes screen controls for subscribing to RSS feeds when using Firefox. You can correctly use the TAB to navigate between RSS feed controls without having to toggle off the Virtual Cursor with INSERT+Z
• JAWS now announces font attributes when you press INSERT+F while using Gmail to create an e-mail message.
• When you save a Web page using Firefox, JAWS no longer echoes the word and sentence as you are typing individual characters.
• JAWS correctly reads combo boxes that appear in Firefox controls.
• JAWS can now locate and use the Flash player buttons when playing sample audio in an audio book at audible.com.
• In the Skim Reading dialog box, JAWS will read the New item in the Rules History combo when it gains focus.
Mozilla Thunderbird
• JAWS will now enter Forms Mode when you navigate to the message body window in a new e-mail message.
• When you press TAB to move into the body of an e-mail message, the Virtual Cursor turns off so that you can type text.
Windows Live Messenger
• JAWS now announces incoming conversations, requests, and history information for Windows Live Messenger.

Download JAWS 10
The following briefly describes how to download and install the JAWS 10 release.
1. Select the appropriate FTP or HTTP download link that appears at the end of this procedure.
2. When the dialog box opens, choose Save and select a location where you can easily find the downloaded executable file.
3. Run the executable and follow the talking installer.
Note: If your corporate firewall prevents you from downloading files using FTP (File Transfer Protocol), use the HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) links instead.

Check for Updates
To check for updates after installing the JAWS release, do the following:
1. Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS application window.
2. Press ALT+H to open the Help menu.
3. Press P to select Check for Updates. The update feature determines if you have the most current release. If you do not, select one or more items from the list and then select INSTALL to begin the update. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in the update.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: If I download the JAWS 10 release from the Web, should I install JAWS from the CD when I receive it?
Answer: No. However, you should check for updates by pressing ALT+H from the JAWS program window, and then pressing P to select Check for Updates.
Question: If I wait until my CD arrives to install JAWS 10, should I also download the version that is available on the Web?
Answer: No, but once you have installed JAWS 10 from the CD, you should check for updates by pressing ALT+H from the JAWS program window, and then pressing P to select Check for Updates.
Question: If I remove my existing version of JAWS before installing JAWS 10, should I remove shared components?
Answer: Yes, however, remember that you will not have speech between removing your current JAWS version and installing JAWS 10. If you download JAWS 10 from the Web, copy the executable file to a location that is easy to find without speech.
Question: If I recently received JAWS 9, how do I get JAWS 10?
Answer: If you purchased JAWS 9 after September 1, 2008, you can download the JAWS 10 release for free from the Freedom Scientific Web site. To verify if you are entitled to the current version, visit the Freedom Scientific Software Activation page. You will need your serial number.
Question: If my SMA expires, will I receive a notice?
Answer: Customers in the U.S. will receive notification in the mail shortly after the JAWS 10 CD arrives. The envelope will have a braille label on the outside, and it will contain an SMA Renewal letter explaining the process in print and braille. The JAWS SMA Renewal Form is also available for download from the Freedom Scientific Web site.
